International Overdose Awareness Day

Montgomery County will host a remembrance ceremony and candlelight vigil on Thursday, Aug. 28, in Downtown Rockville to remember loved ones who have died by overdose. The event will recognize International Overdose Awareness Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about overdoses and reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths. It also serves as a prelude to the observance of National Recovery Month in September.

FREE Back-to-School Vaccinations

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is offering free vaccinations for school-aged children (pre-K through high school) at locations throughout the County until the end of September. Free vaccines are available to Montgomery County school-aged children who are missing any required immunizations.

Silver Spring Jazz Fest

Montgomery County has announced that the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band will headline the free Silver Spring Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is recognized nationally for preserving and promoting traditional New Orleans jazz and is a past recipient of the National Medal of Arts. The festival will run from 3 to 10 p.m. at Veterans Plaza, located at One Veterans Place in Silver Spring.

Gas Leaf Blowers Are Out, Electric Are In

Montgomery County updated the noise law to address the environmental, noise, and health concerns related to gas-powered leaf blowers and leaf vacuums. Effective July 1, 2025, the use of handheld, backpack, and walk-behind gas-powered leaf removal equipment is banned in Montgomery County.

Zero Fare

Montgomery County Department of Transportation will implement a zero fare policy on all Ride On, Ride On extRa, Ride On Flex and Flash buses beginning Sunday, June 29, 2025. This policy expands upon existing programs that already offer free rides to youth, seniors, persons with disabilities, and Montgomery College students. The zero fare policy is part of a broader effort to improve transit accessibility and encourage more residents to use public transportation.

Minimum Wage Increase

On July 1, 2025, the minimum wage rate for large employers (with 51 or more employees) will increase by 50 cents to $17.65 per hour, while the rate for mid-sized employers (with 11-50 employees) will increase by 50 cents to $16 per hour. The rate for small employers (10 or fewer employees) will increase by 50 cents to $15.50 per hour.
